Happiness Comes from Within, Doesn’t It?

In a world filled with distractions, societal pressures, and the relentless pursuit of being busy and successful, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters: our happiness. As a life coach, I often work with people searching for happiness in external achievements ie relationships, careers, or material possessions.

However, the profound truth remains- genuine happiness comes from within, doesn’t it?..

Join me in this blog post as we explore both sides of this idea.

The Illusion of External Happiness?

Many people believe that happiness is something to be found outside of themselves. They think, "I'll be happy when I get that promotion," or "Once I buy my dream house, I'll feel complete." While these achievements can bring us a quick fix of happiness, they are often short lived and lead to the never ending cycle of seeking more. This is because external sources of happiness are fleeting. They provide a quick dopamine rush but rarely lead to lasting fulfilment.

The problem with relying on external factors for happiness is that they are often beyond our control. Jobs can be lost, relationships can change, and material possessions can be lost. When we tie our happiness to these external elements, we place our emotional wellbeing in the hands of circumstances beyond our influence.

The Power of Internal Happiness?

In contrast, when we craft happiness from within, we build a stable foundation that isn't easily shaken by life's ups and downs. Inner happiness is a state of being, a deep seated contentment that remains even amidst challenges. This kind of happiness stems from self acceptance, gratitude, and a sense of purpose.

Nurture Your Inner Happiness

The first step towards inner happiness is accepting ourselves as we are. This means embracing our strengths and weaknesses, our successes and failures. Self-acceptance involves letting go of perfectionism and understanding that we are worthy of love and happiness just as we are. When we stop comparing ourselves to others and start appreciating our unique journey, we pave the way for genuine happiness.

Practicing gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. It helps us recognise the abundance in our lives, from the simple pleasures to the significant blessings. By regularly reflecting on what we're thankful for, we train our minds to see the positive aspects of our experiences, which enhances our overall sense of wellbeing.

Happiness flourishes in the present moment. When we're caught up in regrets about the past or worries about the future, we miss the beauty of now. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, help anchor us in the present. They allow us to fully experience each moment, leading to a deeper appreciation of life and a greater sense of inner peace.

A sense of purpose gives our lives direction and significance. When we engage in activities that align with our values and passions, we experience a profound sense of fulfillment. Whether it’s through our work, relationships, or hobbies, finding meaning in what we do contributes to our overall happiness. Take time to explore what brings you joy and make it a central part of your life. Also check in with your values if you haven’t done this in a while!

While happiness ultimately comes from within, positive relationships play a crucial role in our wellbeing. Surrounding ourselves with supportive, loving people who uplift us can enhance our inner happiness. Nurture these relationships and invest in meaningful connections that contribute to your growth and joy.

The Role of Our Surroundings in Happiness

While it's true that inner happiness is crucial, it's important to acknowledge that our surroundings and circumstances do influence our wellbeing. There is definitely an argument to be made that external changes can significantly enhance our happiness. Perhaps you are the kind of person who is affected by your external surroundings?.. Sometimes it might feel like no matter how much internal work and self reflection you do, you just know you need to move house, get a new job, or ditch that toxic relationship.

A peaceful, inspiring environment can boost our mood and productivity. Whether it's a clutter-free home, a beautiful garden, or a vibrant workspace, our physical surroundings can have a powerful impact on our mental state.

Healthy relationships are vital. Positive interactions with family, friends, and colleagues can provide support, encouragement, and joy. Conversely, toxic relationships can drain our energy and happiness.

Access to opportunities for growth, learning, and adventure can contribute to our happiness. New experiences, travel, and engaging activities can enrich our lives and provide a sense of excitement and satisfaction.

Being part of a supportive community gives us a sense of belonging and connection. Engaging with like-minded people who share our values and interests can foster a deeper sense of happiness.

Here are three questions to help you reflect on whether your happiness tends to come from internal or external sources.

Do you envision having certain achievements, possessions, or changes in your environment? Or do you focus more on feelings of peace, self-acceptance, and personal growth? This can help determine if your happiness is more dependent on external circumstances or internal states.

Reflect on your emotional state in different settings. Do you feel content and at ease when alone, suggesting a strong internal source of happiness? Or do you feel happier and more fulfilled when interacting with others and engaging in social activities, indicating a reliance on external sources?

When facing difficulties, do you find that activities such as practicing mindfulness, self-reflection, and gratitude have the most positive impact? Or do external changes like socialising, shopping, or modifying your physical environment lead to a greater improvement in your mood? This can help you understand whether internal practices or external changes are more crucial for enhancing your happiness.

If any of these questions have raised some concerns for you, please make sure you consult a professional to discuss further.

Balancing Inner and Outer Sources of Happiness

The key to a fulfilling life lies in balancing inner and outer sources of happiness. While inner happiness provides a stable foundation, our surroundings and experiences also play a significant role in enhancing our overall wellbeing. By working on our inner contentment and optimising our external environment, we can create a harmonious and joyful life.

Embracing the Journey

Remember, cultivating inner happiness is a journey, not a destination. It requires consistent effort and a willingness to look inward, even when it’s uncomfortable. As a life coach, I encourage you to set out on this journey with an open heart and mind. Embrace the process of self-discovery and growth, and trust that the happiness you seek is already within you, waiting to be uncovered.

By shifting our focus from external achievements to inner fulfillment, and recognising the positive impact of our surroundings, we can create a well balanced life that is rich in meaning, joy, and resilience. Happiness is not something to be chased; it’s something to be realised. Start today by taking small steps towards nurturing your inner self and enhancing your environment, and watch as your happiness naturally blossoms from within and around you.
